Robert, Apprentice Plant Technician, York Factory, Nestlé UK & Ireland
In 2009 I joined Nestlé UK & Ireland on its Engineering Apprenticeship Programme as an Apprentice Plant Technician. My role is to work within the Factory Maintenance Division at York confectionery plant, where we manufacture some of the UKs most loved brands, including Kit Kat and Aero.
I have the opportunity to learn on the job with experienced technicians who are responsible for ensuring the plant machinery can run effectively without disruption to production. Theres always a new technical problem to solve or a way to improve our systems which makes my work varied and I am constantly building my skills and knowledge.
My apprenticeship offers me not only valuable practical experience while I earn but the opportunity to gain the relevant qualifications at the same time. Through Nestlés partnership with the local college in York I have gained qualifications in PEO (Performing Engineering Operations), a B-tech Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, a Health and Safety qualification, First Aid at Work and numerous others. Once I have completed my four year programme I can then choose to complete a foundation degree, undergraduate degree or masters which provides me with a different route to higher education that I didnt previously feel was possible.
I chose an apprenticeship in Engineering because it means I can continue doing something I love. I have always been interested in engineering, even as a child I used LEGO to design models and as I grew older I worked on the maintenance of car engines in my spare time. I can now see a clear career path in Nestlé which makes me excited for the future.
