More about industrial Placements

My role is within the business systems support team. This involves identifying issues, developing solutions and implementing new technology. Each day I am in contact with end users and our international development team to resolve system issues. I have to manage many different development projects to ensure that worldwide deadlines are met.

During my placement I've worked on implementations of worldwide upgrades, developed a knowledge base and led projects to improve processes. I have been given the responsibility to develop my ideas and the freedom to challenge the standard.

You develop and learn new skills while at Nestlé, but the most valuable skill for my job is communication. This has been a key aspect to my daily contact with international colleagues in developing relationships to benefit and progress my work and, consequently, the outcome of projects.

I wanted to find out more about what type of business I was I applying for and if it was right for me. Like most people I associated Nestlé with chocolate and cereal. But only when I researched the organisation did I uncover the international coverage and the multiple brands which confirm it as the world's largest food company.

While working at Nestlé I have been able to develop a business approach that will help me in any organisation. I have developed my core soft skills for use in different situations of life, not just work. Within my department we use leading techniques to support and implement systems, which have given me fantastic insight to add to my experience.

The most valuable aspect of working at Nestlé, is the experience of having an international organisation relying on you. You're not a placement student, you're a team member with real responsibilities, projects and deadlines. This gives you the best introduction possible to the world of business.

James is studying for a BSC in Business Information Systems at Sheffield Hallam University.
