Tom, Mechanical Apprentice, Hayes Factory, Nestlé UK & Ireland
In 2008 I joined Nestlé UK & Ireland on its Modern Apprenticeship as a Mechanical Apprentice. My role is interesting because it is always varied and constantly changing, but my key responsibility is to repair equipment used in the manufacturing of one of the UKs favourite coffee brands, NESCAFÉ.
I have always had a keen interest in mechanical engineering and the Modern Apprenticeship at Nestlé gives me the opportunity to learn while I earn in a demanding but rewarding environment. Learning on the job means every day I develop new skills and knowledge which reinforces my academic study at college. I have already obtained NVQ level 2, NVQ level 3, key skills BTEC ONC and a HNC in mechanical engineering which Im incredibly proud of.
I have been a project manager on two projects which has not only allowed me to become a respected member of the team but it has also allowed me to develop a range of skills and expertise you cant get straight from the class room theres nothing like learning on the job. The Modern Apprenticeship is challenging to ensure I become the best I can be but I am constantly supported by the team around me who ensure I get the right training, exposure and mentoring.
I dont just view my Apprenticeship as a job but instead see it as a profession. My attitude to succeed combined with the best training and guidance means my career opportunities at Nestlé are endless.
